Healthy Holiday Eating
We can all admit that getting through the holidays while trying to lose weight can be tough. Parties, family get-togethers, favorite holiday foods and extra desserts can set us up for overeating high calorie foods and drinks. Here are some tips to help stick to your goals from November-January.
Have a plan- planning ahead is key. Make sure to have a small snack before going to an event to prevent your stomach from growling the second you walk in.
Plan on treating yourself- by sticking with healthy choices in appropriate portions, you can certainly fit in a treat. Choose your favorite “indulgence” and have a slice, piece or serving. Just keep it to one.
Bring a healthy option- contribute to the party by bringing a healthy dish. Choose cut up veggies with a low fat dip, a fruit plate with yogurt, grilled shrimp with cocktail sauce or a bean dip with whole wheat pita chips. You’ll know exactly what ingredients were used to prepare this dish.
Don’t drink calories- Stick with flavored sparkling water, tea, coffee or diet soda. Alcohol, punch and eggnog are full of empty calories. If you choose to have one of these drinks, treat yourself to a small glass.
Avoid mindless eating- we often don’t pay attention to how much we are eating when food is available and we are having a good time. Position yourself away from the food table and fill your plate with a large serving of vegetables and fruit to help limit other items.
Focus on holiday cheer- Make family and friends the most important part of the holiday get together, not the food
Get moving- stick to your exercise plan and try to fit in additional workouts. This could include a walk to see the holiday lights, a walk through the mall or a trip to the gym.
Avoid stress- avoid situations that cause you stress. Seek activities that help manage stress: meditation, walking, yoga, reading, knitting.
